Cat, Cat, Cats - 7/17/08

I've been baby sitting my Grandcats this week; my daughter's 3.  Yes 3!  Jane is 18 and deaf and has lost her ability to effectively manage her own fur coat or to cover up her business in the litter box (Ewww).  She looks like a dirty dust mop and I must say that waking up to the smell of cat business in the middle of the night isn't my favorite thing in the world.  The other two are about a year old and are litter mates but are as different as night and day.  Harley is large and is a calico and Dinah is petite and dark furred.  They're all a little skittish and are taking a long time to warm up to Grandma.

Yesterday my daughter called and left a phone message while I was out.  She was calling the cats on the message.  When I played it back the two young ones went nuts looking for her.  I played it back 3 times for them because it was just so funny to watch.

I had heard rumors that the old cat liked to meow at the top of her lungs in the middle of the night for no apparent reason, but last night was the first time I got to experience that particular thrill.  It not only woke me up, but it freaked out the other two cats as well and propelled them up onto the bed with me which they hadn't done so far.

At 7:30 this morning Dinah was playing with my feet so I figured sleep was over and got up.  I had the alarm set for 8:00 anyway.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a cat but I'm not sure I want to take on the care and feeding of any additional mammals at this time.

Oh, and yeah, Cosmo the Beta is here too.

Today is my Granddaughter's 16th Birthday.  Happy Birthday Megan!!!!!!

  1. Some mammals are high maintenance, some are low maintenance. You sound like you have at least one high maintenance kitty. What sort of animal is Cosmo?

  2. MEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!

I have one low maintenance cat right now myself. And one very high maintenance requires his insulin shot twice a day and one dog that i'm watching for my Dad that won't stop licking my feet.. ewwwww

  3. Cosmo is one of those blue Beta fighting fish. Its hard to bond with a fish.

  4. If you want to really have fun Dave. Give the insulin shots to the other cat and the dog and see what happens. (Only kidding, don't turn me in to the SPCA.)

  5. Ah, yes, those Betas are very popular with teachers. Our school gave up on hamsters and the like when they kept on getting loose. Ditto with pet gerbils, white rats, lizards and the like. One teacher had tarantulas - guess how often I went to that room.

  6. We had two rabbits - Snowy and Fluffy. We thought they were both female. We were half right. hahahahaha Did I mention they shared a cage? hahahahaha

  7. In some ways, taking a kitty on a test run isn't a bad idea, in other ways it's not a great idea. Since they aren't really yours, you don't necessarily bond with
the animal. Kinda the same process as babysitting unrelated kids, you know? You may love the, but they aren't really yours. Btw, I think Janey is so ugly she's adorable. (the meowing and smell, not so much

  8. Bennett, I wouldn't have gone in the room with tarantulas either. I understand its hard to tell the sex of rabbits. You probably weren't the first one to make that mistake.

Sharon, I looked at cats for a adoption at Pet Smart yesterday afternoon. I saw two kittens that tugged at my heart so I got out of there as fast as I could. As for Janey, she is one ugly cat. She come at sits and stares at me with her big myopic eyes. I feel like she's trying to send me psychic messages. What can they be?

  9. Psychic messages? Feeeeed me. Feeeeeeeeeed me. Just a guess.

  10. When a cat
    calls me an idiot
    it's generally time
    for a pounce
    and then a pink belly
    :>)

Tom, indeed one must get one's revenge. :-)

  12. If you were at the PetSmart over by Filene's basement, I was there last week playing with all those kitties. There were a few in there I would have taken. In fact, the two torties reminded me of Bess and her sister Molly. The best kitty, and if you do change your mind, was the little white boy in the front window. (at least he was when we went) He played so nicely with no claws!

  13. I was in the one in Greenbelt. Sorry I don't know if he's still there or not.

  14. Hey, in Jane's defense, she *never* had the ability to cover up her business in the litter box...it isn't something she's lost in her old age. That's what happens when you buy one of those pet store kitty-farm kittens, I guess.

Methinks she doth protest too much...when I called about picking them up this evening, grandma was trying to convince me to leave them until tomorrow. Also, the grandcats have acquired a new toy while I was gone, and the younger two look like they have gained 10 pounds each.

  15. You'd better get Jane today, because if she's here tonight I'm going to do her in. I think she was mad that you didn't take her home too last night because she was MEOWING at the top of her longs all night long. OK, so she'd stop just long enough for me to fall asleep but then she'd do it again and keep doing it until I'd look over the side of the bed and tell her to shut up already. I'm tired.

  16. Gee Jen.. That's just mean that you left Janie at mom's all defenseless and all.. I have a variation on a Dr. Demento song for you ;-)

  17. I thought Janie would enjoy one night away from the demons...how was I to know she would actually miss them???

  19. I considered screaming at her when I got up this morning and she was sleeping, but I figured she wouldn't hear me anyway. I wouldn't really kill the kitty.

Dave that's not the "Dead Puppies" song you're alluding to is it?
