Lost - 11/13/07

Poem: “Lost,” by David Wagoner, from Collected Poems 1956-1976 (Indiana University Press).

Lost

Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you
Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be known.
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,
I have made this place around you.
If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here.
No two trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows
Where you are. You must let it find you.

  1. Nope!
    It's an interesting meditation
But has nothing to do really
with finding one's way back to civilization
    It's more like consulting
    the little magnet that resides
    along with certain flies
in the middle of your forehead

    Practically speaking
I try to remember to watch my backtrail
If I guess wrong in making my circle
that's what I'm going to have to follow
    :>)

  5. Personally, I have been out in the trees absolutely lost and it was absolutely terrifying. But then, I didn't have this beautiful poem with me? Oh hell, I'd still be terrified.

  6. I was lost in the woods once in Canada. It was scary but fortunately I had a dog with me who belonged to the lodge owner. I wish I had had this poem, but after a couple of hours of wandering lost with little water, well, all the trees looked the same. It is a very cool poem.

  7. As a metaphor this is very powerful.

  8. I always use a metaphor when I'm lost in the woods. It clears the mind so there is more room for panic.

  9. No the third eye is not for panic. It is for serenity and precognition. In other words, I should have used it to see I would be lost in the woods and then not go out....unless of course it was ultimately beneficial for me to be lost in the woods to begin with.
